How to Find a Teaching Job
Teaching is an incredibly rewarding career. The difference between people who dream about becoming teachers and people that know how to find a teaching job is a matter of knowledge, not intelligence or determination. The proper knowledge will open up a variety of doors that you may have never seen before.
Step 1 - Learn what credentials are required to teach in your state. Each state has its own regulations on what is required to teach at various levels. In some states certificates are required, in others licenses are, and in others there is no requirement other than a bachelor's degree. The requirements vary widely, so it is best to figure out what is required of you from the beginning.
Step 2 - Go back to school. Obtaining the teaching credentials that your state requires is only the first step in your journey to find a teaching job. Earning degrees in the fields that you want to teach will help you to stand out amongst the crowd of applicants. You will need to show that you are well educated in the field that you want to teach and that you have the ability to teach a variety of different kinds of people with a variety of learning styles.
Step 3 - Make a name for yourself when you are student teaching. This will be the time that you are able to showcase your superb abilities to teach. Many student teachers are offered a job with the school that they complete their student teaching in. Work on learning as much as you can while you are student teaching. Do not hesitate to ask questions. Just like with the students that you will be teaching, there is no such thing as a dumb questions except for the question that you do not ask.
Step 4 - Spruce up your resume. There are lots of people that want to be teachers that are trying to find a teaching job. Ensure that you are highlighting all of your education and experience that will make you an excellent candidate for the teaching job that you desire.
Step 5 - Gain as much experience as you can in the field of education. If you are unable to find a teaching job right away, improve your odds of finding the position that you want soon by making yourself as marketable as possible. Pursue tutoring, classroom assisting, and summer camp counseling to show that you work well with students and to gain some practical, hands on knowledge.
Step 6 - Submit your applications to as many schools as possible. Do not hesitate to apply to schools outside of the school district that you completed your student teaching at. The most schools that you apply to, the better chance you have of getting a teaching job right away.
Step 7 - Substitute teach if you cannot find a permanent teaching job. You can be a substitute teacher in more than one school district in many cases. Working as a substitute teacher can get your foot in the door at a variety of schools and school districts and can keep you busy while you are searching for the perfect teaching job. Stay focused, and you will be rewarded with a teaching job that you love and are thrilled to have.
